Fort Worth Dining Chair Reupholstery
Dining chairs are one of the most practical furniture reupholstery investments — the frames last decades, the fabric wears out. Our broader furniture reupholstery service covers the full residential scope, but dining chairs have their own considerations: seat construction type, set matching, COM yardage, and coordinating host chairs. All of that is covered here.
Why Dining Chair Reupholstery Makes Sense
A set of dining chairs with solid frames — even builder-grade chairs from 10–15 years ago — is worth reupholstering. The frame still has life. The fabric is what's stained, faded, or dated. Replacing the seat fabric on a set of six chairs is substantially less expensive than replacing the set, and it gives you control over the fabric — performance, pattern, color — that a new-purchase replacement doesn't. You also keep the frames that already match your table.
Singles, Pairs, and Full Sets
We don't have a minimum quantity. A single damaged chair, a pair of host chairs in a contrasting fabric, or a full set of eight — we quote all of it. Sets are quoted together, which affects material calculations (yardage for patterned fabric is calculated across the full run to ensure consistent pattern placement). A single chair with COM fabric is equally welcome. We give turnaround estimates based on what you're bringing in.
Foam Assessment on Every Chair
Seat foam is assessed as part of every dining chair project. Many dining chair drop-in pads have thin foam that compresses quickly — especially on chairs that see daily use. If the foam is still structurally sound, we re-cover it. If it has flattened or broken down, we replace it at the same time. For chairs where comfort is a priority — particularly at a table where people sit for extended meals — upgrading the foam density is worth discussing.
Drop off at 6925 E Lancaster Ave, Suite B, Fort Worth TX 76112. Drop-in seat pads can be brought without the chair frames if transport is a challenge — just pull the pads out and bring those. Mon–Fri 7AM–5PM, Sat 7AM–4PM.
Construction Types
The scope and approach changes based on how your dining chair is built. Most fall into one of three categories — which one you have determines the process and timeline.
Type 01
Drop-In Seat
The most common type. A removable padded seat that lifts out of the chair frame — held by the frame geometry or a few screws, not glued or stapled in place. To check: look under the chair for screws at the seat corners, or try lifting the pad upward from inside the frame. Drop-in seat reupholstery is the simplest and fastest scope — the pad comes out, the old fabric comes off, new fabric goes on, the pad goes back in. Most dining rooms built in the last 20 years have drop-in seats.
Type 02
Pad-Back Chair
A chair with a separate upholstered back pad in addition to the seat pad — both are visible and padded, but the back is a distinct panel attached to the chair back rail rather than a loose cushion. Pad-back chairs have twice the fabric surface of a drop-in seat. The seat is typically still a drop-in; the back pad is either stapled to the frame or held by a separate panel construction. Both are reupholstered, and matching pattern or grain direction across both panels is handled at the fabric calculation stage.
Type 03
Fully Upholstered Dining Chair
The seat and back are both fully wrapped — fabric extends around the frame, with no visible wood on the back or under-seat area. This is the most involved dining chair reupholstery scope: the chair is fully stripped to the frame, all upholstery is replaced, and the construction includes back wrap, seat wrap, and finishing details (welt cord, tack strips, or gimp trim along the visible edges). Fully upholstered dining chairs are common in formal dining rooms and on higher-end pieces. These are assessed individually at drop-off for an accurate scope and quote.
Sets & Multiples
A set of chairs is quoted and built as a single project — which affects how we calculate fabric, manage pattern matching, and schedule the work. For the broader question of whether to reupholster or replace a dining set, when reupholstery beats replacement lays out the comparison directly. If you're also looking at the sofa and sofa and couch reupholstery in the same space, combining the scope at assessment makes the most sense — it's one drop-off, one quote, and one pickup.
Pattern Matching Across a Set
For chairs with patterned fabric, pattern placement needs to be consistent across the set. On a dining chair seat, this typically means centering the pattern repeat on each seat pad. For a patterned fabric with a 12" repeat, the same part of the pattern appears in the same location on every chair. Yardage calculation for patterned COM fabric is done per-set, not per-chair, to account for the pattern repeat waste between cuts. If you're sourcing COM fabric with a pattern, call before you buy — we'll give you the yardage including repeat waste.
Host Chairs and Contrasting Fabric
A common approach is reupholstering the standard dining chairs in one fabric and the host chairs (the chairs at the head and foot of the table) in a contrasting fabric or the same fabric in a different color. This is a design decision, not a technical one — we handle both at the same time, using separate yardage calculations for each fabric. The result is a coordinated look that reads as intentional rather than mismatched. Bring reference images if you have a direction in mind; we'll confirm the fabric is appropriate for the application.
Turnaround for Sets
Drop-in seat sets are the fastest scope. A set of six to eight chairs with drop-in seats typically takes 2–5 business days — longer if fabric needs to be ordered or if the set has fully upholstered construction. We give a firm pickup window at drop-off. Larger sets (10+ chairs) and fully upholstered sets are quoted with a longer window, which we establish at assessment. All chairs in a set are returned at the same pickup.
What to Do If Only Some Chairs Are Damaged
If only two or three chairs in a set of eight are stained or damaged, you have a choice: reupholster the whole set for a consistent result, or replace only the damaged seats. If you reupholster only the damaged chairs in the same fabric as the originals, the match will depend on whether the original fabric is still available. If it's not available or the remaining chairs are showing wear, doing the full set now is the practical choice. We'll give you the honest tradeoffs at assessment.
How It Works
Drop off the chairs or seat pads, select or bring your fabric, pick them up when done. For most drop-in seat sets, that's 2–5 business days.
Drop Off & Assessment
Bring the chairs or just the drop-in seat pads to 6925 E Lancaster Ave, Suite B. We confirm the construction type, assess the foam condition on each seat, and calculate the yardage required for the fabric you're planning to use. For COM fabric, you can drop the fabric at the same time. Assessment is free and takes 10–15 minutes for a standard set.
Fabric Confirmation & Quote
We confirm fabric yardage, pattern placement approach (if applicable), and foam replacement needs. For sets with a fabric choice decision, we walk through the options. The written quote covers fabric, foam, and labor with no additions after you sign off. We establish the pickup window at this step.
In-Shop Build
All work done in-shop. Drop-in seats are stripped, foam replaced or re-used based on condition, and covered in the selected fabric. For pad-back and fully upholstered chairs, the full reupholstery scope is done in-shop by our Fort Worth team. For sets, all chairs are built together to ensure consistent fabric tension and pattern placement across the set.
Pickup
We call before the pickup window. All chairs in the set are returned at the same time. At pickup we walk through the set so you can confirm the pattern placement and fabric tension are what you expected before you take them home. Any issue that doesn't look right gets addressed before you leave the shop.
Common Questions
How much does it cost to reupholster dining chairs?
We give written quotes after assessing the chairs — not a range over the phone. Drop-in seat projects are the most economical scope. Full dining chair reupholstery (seat plus back pad or full wrap) costs more. Sets are quoted together and the assessment is free. Call (817) 623-0589 to describe what you have, or bring the chairs to 6925 E Lancaster Ave, Suite B, Fort Worth.
How long does dining chair reupholstery take?
Drop-in seat sets are the fastest — typically 2–5 business days for a standard set of six to eight chairs. Fully upholstered dining chairs take longer (5–10 business days depending on construction and set size). We give a firm pickup window at drop-off and call before the date if we're ahead or behind.
What is a drop-in seat and how is it reupholstered?
A drop-in seat is a removable seat pad that lifts out of the chair frame — held by the frame geometry or a few screws, not glued in place. Reupholstering it means removing the pad from the chair, stripping the old fabric, replacing foam if needed, applying new fabric, and dropping it back in. It's the most straightforward dining chair upholstery project. Most dining room chairs sold in the last 20 years have drop-in seats. Check yours by looking under the chair for corner screws, or try lifting the seat pad upward from inside the frame.
Can I reupholster just one dining chair, or do you require a set?
We do singles. The most common single-chair project is a host or captain's chair in a different fabric than the rest of the set — an intentional contrast. We also do single chairs with specific damage when the rest of the set is in good condition. There's no minimum quantity. Sets are quoted together for material calculation purposes, but we don't require a minimum.
Can I use my own fabric (COM) for dining chair reupholstery?
Yes. COM is welcome. Dining chairs are a particularly manageable COM project — a set of six drop-in seats typically needs 3–4 yards of 54" fabric depending on seat size and whether there's a pattern repeat to match. Bring the fabric when you drop the chairs off; we'll confirm yardage. Custom furniture upholstery covers the full range of what we can do with COM material if you're thinking about custom specifications beyond a standard fabric swap.
Is it worth reupholstering dining chairs?
Usually yes, especially for drop-in seat projects on solid-frame chairs. The frame on a well-built dining chair lasts decades — the fabric is the part that wears. Reupholstering the seats is significantly less expensive than replacing a matching set, and lets you choose fabric that performs better than whatever was original. For chairs with cracked or failing frames, we'll tell you at assessment whether the structure warrants the investment.
